Echo of The Worlds Columbian Exposition
Centennial Wheel on Chicago’s Navy Pier reminds one that the Ferris Wheel was invented for Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair. Cheney views this monumental dynamic object as a giant contemporary sculpture, and it is the subject of Echo of the World’s Columbian Exposition. It’s phthalo and manganese blue lights form a nautilus form and complement the glittering cadmium yellow of the structure of the wheel. Pointillist paint strokes juxtaposed against the glazed night sky makes the surface vibrate with energy. Echo of the World’s Columbian Exposition is a contemporary genre subject painted in Cheney’s unique Postmodern Impressionist style. It is part of Postmodern Impressions, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and limited edition graphics at the famed Atlas Galleries on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. This work explores the unique character of the contemporary city, and its people.
