Pointillist paint strokes accentuating a black and gold theme activate the surface of the canvas and frame the silhouette of an amorous couple approaching the Chicago Theater in Evening Out on State Street. The horizontal thrust of the colorful Chicago EL station is balanced by the vertical signs, lamp posts and buildings. Evening Out on State Street is a contemporary genre subject painted in Cheney’s unique Postmodern Impressionist style. It is part of Postmodern Impressions, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and limited edition graphics at the famed Atlas Galleries on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. This work explores the unique character of the contemporary city, and its people.
