“The theme for this composition was one which gave Renoir particular pleasure, he used it in six of his lithographs and etchings. Renoir had been introduced to working the copper plate, first for drypoint and then etching, through his friend Berthe Morisot. As his work began to concentrate more on the interpretation of light rather than form, he found increasing satisfaction in the tonal effects he could achieve in etching medium.
