Slugger’s in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood is pure Chicago, and it is the subject of Passion. It is an absurd yet delightful jumble of neon signs, flags, buntings and banners in the service of sports, pizza, dueling pianos, indoor batting cages, party rooms, and beer. Phthalo green and bright cadmium red, and phthalo blue and cadmium yellow, complement each other creating a sense of excitement. It is reminiscent of the Ashcan School of American Realism and the paintings of Edward Hopper, his painting Nighthawks in particular. Passion is a contemporary genre subject painted in Cheney’s unique Postmodern Impressionist style. It is part of Postmodern Impressions, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and limited edition graphics at the famed Atlas Galleries on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. This work explores the unique character of the contemporary city, and its people.
