Rainy Evening in Paris
Warm electric lights and their reflections on the wet pavement by one of Cheney’s favorite Parisian cafés, Café de Flore, is the subject of A Rainy Evening in Paris. Joyful foliage and flowers above the entrance juxtapose against the inclement weather. One can almost imagine seeing interactions of famous writers and philosophers like Georges Bataille, Robert Desnos, Léon-Paul Fargue, Raymond Queneau, as well as Pablo Picasso, who were all regulars here. A Rainy Evening in Paris is a contemporary genre subject painted in Cheney’s unique Postmodern Impressionist style. It is part of Postmodern Impressions, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and limited edition graphics at the famed Atlas Galleries on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. This work explores the unique character of the contemporary city, and its people.
