Serene Afternoon by the Jackson Park Lagoon
The curve of a Japanese bridge in Chicago’s Osaka Garden echoes the dome of Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry and the curving organic forms of bushes, trees and rocks in Serene Afternoon by the Jackson Park Lagoon. The loose active paint strokes of the adjacent colors of manganese and cobalt blue and viridian and chromium green create an energetic harmony across the canvas. Serene Afternoon by the Jackson Park Lagoon is reminiscent of Claude Monet’s paintings at Giverny. It is painted in Cheney’s unique Postmodern Impressionist style and is part of Postmodern Impressions, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and limited edition graphics at the famed Atlas Galleries on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. This work explores the unique character of the contemporary city, and its people.
