Summer Afternoon at the Conservatory

  • A woman is framed by the “crystal palace” of the Lincoln Park Conservatory and its gardens as she relaxes under a sun hat in Summer Afternoon at the Conservatory. Decorative active paint strokes of intense colors make the surface seem to shimmer. It is reminiscent of French and American Impressionists, especially Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and Frederick Carl Frieseke. Summer Afternoon at the Conservatory is a contemporary genre subject painted in Cheney’s unique Postmodern Impressionist style. It is part of Postmodern Impressions, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and limited edition graphics at the famed Atlas Galleries on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. This work explores the unique character of the contemporary city, and its people
