This etching from 1681, Rembrandt depicts the moment when Tobias’ traveling companion, after revealing himself as the archangel Raphael, returns to heaven, his old mother drops her stick in fright, while Tobias and his father Tobit kneel reverently on the ground. Even the donkey looks up in amazement. The chest in the foreground contains gifts that the family had intended to present Raphael.
