Artist: Rembrandt
Title: The Card Player
Media: Etching
Size: 3" x 3"
# 39666

The card player studies his hand intently and looks as if he is about to play a card. The figure is brightly lit from the front. This man with the pronounced jaw appears in another etching Rembrandt made in the same year “Man at Desk Wearing Cross and Chain”. He may have been one of Rembrandts pupils. However the staged pose and the old fashioned costume suggest that he is probably modeling for a genre scene rather than posing for an actual portrait.
