Under The Tip-Top-Tap
A dramatic one-point perspective drives the eye past Chicago’s iconic Allerton Hotel in Under the Tip Top Tap. Decorative pointillistic paint strokes of cadmium yellow complemented by glazes and scumbles of ultramarine blue and dioxine purple create an active two dimensional surface in tension with the three dimensional illusion. It is reminiscent of the Les Nabis, especially Vuillard and Bonnard. Under the Tip Top Tap is a contemporary genre subject painted in Cheney’s unique Postmodern Impressionist style. It is part of Postmodern Impressions, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and limited edition graphics at the famed Atlas Galleries on Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. This work explores the unique character of the contemporary city, and its people.
